CBC SCHOOL SUPPORT
Training & Follow-ups
The Institute of Teachers Professional Development (ITPD) is committed to helping schools effectively implement the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in all levels of education. ITPD works closely with numerous schools to provide comprehensive support for teachers at every stage.
For the Play Group level, we understand that many teachers struggle with implementing a plan for young children. To address this, we have developed PLAYGROUP TEACHERS’ COURSE specifically designed for playgroup teachers. Our team of experienced trainers will guide your teachers on how to effectively implement play activities and assess learning progress.
Pre-Primary levels (PP1 and PP2):
As per the 2023 recommendations of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER), the five learning areas will continue unchanged. These activity areas include Language, Mathematics, Creative, Environmental, Religious, and Pastoral programs. The Institute of Teachers Professional Development (ITPD) is dedicated to training and assisting teachers in PP1 & PP2, ensuring their adept understanding and seamless implementation of the curriculum design, including the integration of ICT during lesson delivery.
Lower Primary (Grades 1-3):
As outlined in the PWPER report for Lower Primary (Grade 1-3), the learning areas have been streamlined from 9 to 7, resulting in a reduction in the total number of lessons from 35 to 31 per week, inclusive of PPI. Notably, Hygiene and Nutrition Activities have been consolidated within Environmental Activities, now allocated 4 lessons per week. Creative Arts, encompassing Art, Craft, Music, and Physical Education, will now consist of a total of 7 lessons per week.
Upper Primary (Grades 4-6):
For Upper Primary (Grade 4-6), there has been a refinement in learning areas, decreasing from 10 to 8, resulting in a reduction of weekly lessons from 40 to 35, inclusive of PPI. Notably, Agriculture and aspects of Home Science have been amalgamated into a comprehensive subject named Agriculture and Nutrition, with an allocation of 4 lessons per week. Additionally, Creative Arts, covering Art, Craft, Music, and Physical Education, will now constitute a total of 7 lessons per week. Other Languages, both Indigenous and Foreign, will be implemented through non-formal or co-curricular programs.
Junior School (Grades 7-9):
In Junior School, there has been a significant reduction in the number of learning areas, streamlined from 14 to 9. All learners in Junior School will now take ALL the 9 subjects. This restructuring has led to a decrease in the total number of lessons per week, now totaling 40, inclusive of PPI, down from the previous 45.
Integrated Science has been expanded to include Health Education, comprising a total of 5 lessons per week. Social Studies now incorporates Life Skills, with a total of 4 lessons per week. Agriculture and aspects of Home Science have been amalgamated into a composite subject named Agriculture and Nutrition, with an allocation of 4 lessons per week. Notably, some elements of Home Science have been transferred to Integrated Science and other relevant areas.
Pre-Technical Studies now combines Computer Studies and Business Studies, with a total of 4 lessons per week. A composite subject, Creative Arts & Sports, now includes PE and Sports, Visual Arts, and Performing Arts, with 5 lessons per week.
Furthermore, Other Languages (Indigenous, Sign Language (SL), and Foreign languages) will be implemented as non-formal or co-curricular programs and will remain non-examinable in Junior School.

LEARNERS PROGRESS RECORDING AND REPORTING
Many teachers do not record their learners’ performance on a regular basis (i.e. after each sub-strand). They wait until the end of the term to consolidate the learners progress report. Teachers end up marking Exceeding, Meeting, Approaching or Below Expectations at random and subsequently struggle when writing comments for each sub-strand in the learners’ report books.
This means that the report will not be accurate since they will have forgotten how the individual learner performed. Even with the inaccurate learners’ records, most schools rely on report books that can get lost or misplaced leaving no trace of the learner’s previous performance.
Under CBC Support programme, teachers learn how to continuously and effectively prepare, record, report and back up learners’ progress and assessment reports for future reference.
LEARNING ASSESSMENT
Many schools are still purchasing mid-term, end-of-term and end-of-year examinations that are no different from the 8-4-4 exams. These commercial exams do not assess the learning outcomes stated in the curriculum designs or the competences that the learner has attained during the term or year under CBC.
ITPD addresses this challenge by holding working meetings with school teachers in order to plan, prepare, develop and moderate school own exams/tests (known as authentic assessment Tasks or Integrated Learning Assessment – ILA) that focus on what the learners have learnt during a given period.
