CHILD RIGHTS AND PROTECTION
Course Overview
This 5-day short course aims to provide Kenyan teachers with a comprehensive understanding of child rights and protection. Participants will explore the importance of safeguarding children’s rights and learn strategies to create safe and supportive learning environments that promote children’s well-being and development. The course will cover essential topics related to child rights, international conventions, child protection policies, and practical approaches to identify and respond to child protection concerns.
Duration: 5 days (each day consists of approximately 2 hours of learning)
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course the participants will be able to:
- Understand the concept of child rights and the importance of upholding and promoting these rights in the educational setting.
- Recognize the international conventions and legal frameworks pertaining to child rights and protection.
- Identify the different forms of child abuse and neglect and learn to recognize signs of potential abuse or harm.
- Develop strategies to create a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students.
- Familiarize themselves with child protection policies and procedures in Kenyan schools.
- Learn to respond appropriately to child protection concerns and know the reporting mechanisms.
- Understand the role of teachers in advocating for and safeguarding children’s rights.
- Promote positive discipline techniques and alternatives to corporal punishment.
- Collaborate with parents, caregivers, and the community to ensure child safety and protection.

Day 1: Introduction to Child Rights and Protection
- Definition of child rights and its relevance to education
- International conventions and Kenyan laws protecting children’s rights
- The teacher’s role in upholding child rights
Understanding Child Development and Well-being
- Key stages of child development and their implications for teaching
- Factors affecting child well-being in the classroom and beyond
Day 2: Recognizing Child Abuse and Neglect
- Understanding different forms of child abuse (physical, emotional, sexual)
- Identifying signs of child abuse and neglect
- The importance of early intervention and support
Creating Safe Learning Environments
- Strategies for building a safe and inclusive classroom
- Preventing bullying and discrimination
- Addressing gender-based violence and stereotypes
Day 3: Child Protection Policies and Procedures
- Overview of Kenyan child protection policies and guidelines
- Reporting mechanisms and obligations for teachers
Responding to Child Protection Concerns
- Appropriate steps to take when encountering child protection issues
- Supporting affected children and involving relevant authorities
Day 4: Positive Discipline and Behavior Management
- Promoting positive behavior in the classroom
- Alternatives to corporal punishment and negative reinforcement
Engaging Parents and Caregivers in Child Protection
- Building partnerships with parents and caregivers to ensure child safety
- Involving the community in child protection initiatives
Day 5: Child Rights and Inclusive Education
- Ensuring access to education for all children, including those with disabilities
- Advocating for the rights of marginalized and vulnerable children
Child Online Safety
- Understanding digital risks and dangers for children
- Strategies to promote online safety and responsible internet use
Course Delivery Method: The course will be delivered through a combination of live sessions, online lectures, interactive discussions, group activities, and multimedia presentations.
Assessment: Participants’ understanding and application of the course content will be assessed through online assignments, projects, and a final assessment.
Certificate: Successful participants will be awarded a CERTIFICATE of training.
