The reviewed guidelines on registration of basic education institutions that were developed in 2010, requires all basic learning institutions to be RE-REGISTERED afresh even if the schools had acquired the permanent registration.

The registration guidelines have been reviewed in line with Basic Education Act of 2013, Basic Education Curriculum Framework of 2017 and other existing legal and policy documents on education and other relevant sectors.

The registration guidelines have been reviewed at a time when Kenya is transforming its education and training from 8-4-4 to 2-6-6-3 system. The Country has adopted the Competency Based Curriculum for all levels of basic education.

The levels comprise of Pre-primary (2 years), Primary (6 years), Secondary (6 years split into Junior and Senior levels of 3 years each) and Tertiary (3 years).

The registration guidelines are used in the registration of institutions offering other KICD approved national and international curricula. The registration guidelines also describe to education providers the processes, procedures and requirements of establishing and registering a basic education institution with a focus on providing quality education.

The minimum standards for both human and physical resources have been described across all the levels of basic education. The registration guidelines provide the requirements for registration, procedures for establishment of both private and public institutions, re-registration process, closure and de-registration process, basic physical facilities requirements, application forms and checklist for all levels.

According to the new registration guidelines there are two categories of registration.
1. One year provisional registration which is now valid for one (1) year
2. Five year registration which is now valid for five (5) years

This means that registration of schools will be renewable every five years. It is therefore recommended that all schools that are offering the 8-4-4 system education be re-registered as required by law if the education curriculum changes. In this case the curriculum has changed from the 8-4-4 to 2-6-6-3 commonly referred to as the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC)
